Entry points in Van Nuys homes and buildings
Long eaves on ranch houses
Ranch houses have long rooflines with wide, open eaves and vents between the rafters. The small blocks and screens that close those spaces loosen and rot over the decades, and roof rats find the gaps anywhere along the length of the house.
Apartment buildings on the boulevards
Apartment buildings along and near Sepulveda, Van Nuys and Victory Boulevards have carports, laundry rooms and trash areas on the ground floor, out of sight of the units. Rodents move from those spaces through shared walls and pipe chases into the units above.
Next to the airport and industry
Hangars, warehouses, the brewery grounds and the industrial strips near the airport and the rail line are large buildings with loading doors and outdoor storage. Those sites give rodents food and cover, and the homes that border them are only a fence away.
Along the Sepulveda Basin
Homes near Woodley Park and the Sepulveda Basin border wide open land along the Los Angeles River, with grass, trees and water. Wild rodents live in that open land, and houses at its edge can see them cross over at ground level, under fences and gates.
In apartment buildings, rodents move between units through shared walls, pipe runs and garages, so a problem can start next door.
