Rats and mice in the San Gabriel Valley
The San Gabriel Valley runs east from Pasadena and Alhambra to Pomona and Claremont. Much of it is older suburbs on generous lots: Craftsman and Spanish-style houses in Pasadena, post-war homes across Arcadia, Temple City and El Monte, and newer hillside streets in Diamond Bar, Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights.
Big lots mean big trees, and the valley’s orange-grove past lives on in backyard citrus. Roof rats travel along fence tops, trees and power lines, and an older roofline with a loose vent screen or a gap at the eaves is all they need.
Where rodents get in around the San Gabriel Valley
Older homes with character
Pasadena’s Craftsman bungalows and period homes have exposed rafters, wood siding and vents that open up as the house ages, each one a possible way in.
Fruit trees and gardens
Citrus, avocado and loquat trees are common in San Gabriel Valley yards, and fallen fruit is a steady food source.
Restaurants and warehouses
The busy restaurant streets of Alhambra, San Gabriel, Rosemead and Arcadia, and the warehouses around the City of Industry, draw rodents to businesses too. Commercial rodent control covers them.
At the foot of the mountains
Monrovia, Duarte, Azusa and Glendora back onto the San Gabriel Mountains, with brush and canyons right behind the homes.
