Rats and mice in the South Bay, Long Beach and the Gateway Cities
This part of Los Angeles County mixes beach towns, older neighborhoods and some of the region’s busiest industry. Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo sit on the coast; Torrance, Gardena and Hawthorne fill the South Bay; and Downey, Norwalk, Whittier and the other Gateway Cities stretch east toward Orange County. Long Beach and its port sit in the middle.
Near the coast and around rail yards, warehouses and the port, Norway rats, which burrow and come in at ground level, are common. Inland, older homes with alleys, detached garages and fruit trees see roof rats at the roofline as well.
Where rodents get in around here
Alleys and detached garages
Many older blocks in Inglewood, Hawthorne, Compton and South Gate have alleys and detached garages, where stored things and trash bins give rodents cover close to the house.
Beach cottages and bungalows
Older cottages in Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Long Beach often sit on raised foundations, with crawlspace vent screens that wear out in the salty air.
Warehouses, the port and food businesses
Distribution centers in Carson and Commerce, the area around the Port of Long Beach and the restaurants along the main streets all need rodent control too. Commercial rodent control covers them.
Ground-level entry
Norway rats dig. Gaps under doors, cracks in the foundation and openings around pipes at ground level are where they get in.
