How rodents reach Silver Lake homes
Modern houses over the slope
Many mid-century houses here were built out over the hill on posts and beams, with flat roofs and long runs of glass. The open space underneath, and the joints where a flat roof meets a wall or a beam passes outside, are places where gaps can open.
Houses beside the stairways
The public stairways pass between back fences, ivy and overgrown slopes. Roof rats use that strip of greenery as a travel path, and houses that back onto the stairs have cover reaching right up to their walls, eaves and foundation vents.
Near the reservoir and the river
Trees and landscaping around the reservoir, and the brush along the Los Angeles River near Riverside Drive, give rodents shelter close to homes. Norway rats burrow in soft ground and come in at ground level, through foundation vents, garage doors and gaps around pipes.
Above the shops on Sunset
Near Sunset Junction, restaurants and shops sit under or beside apartments. Rodents drawn to kitchens and bins behind the storefronts can travel along shared walls and utility lines into the units above, so the building as a whole matters, not just one unit.
Age matters here: vent screens, eaves and foundations open up over the decades, and those small gaps are how mice and rats get in.
