Where rodents get into Echo Park houses
Victorian woodwork
The Victorians of Carroll Avenue and Kensington Road have wood siding, decorative trim, porches and raised floors with vents underneath. On a house well over a century old, small gaps open where trim, siding and foundation meet, and mice need very little room to get through.
Cottages along the stairways
Houses on the Curran, Delta and Avalon stairways sit among gardens, agaves and cottages, with greenery running from lot to lot. Roof rats travel through that cover and along fences and wires, and a house beside the steps has planting right against its walls.
The edge of Elysian Park
Elysian Heights backs onto the open hillsides of Elysian Park. Brush, trees and wild land right behind the houses mean rodents live close by, and a torn crawlspace screen or a worn garage door seal is enough to bring them indoors.
Around the lake and Sunset
Restaurants and cafes along Sunset and Glendale boulevards, and the busy park around the lake, mean food and trash close to homes. Apartments and storefronts nearby share alleys and bins, where rats feed before looking for openings at ground level.
In apartment buildings, rodents move between units through shared walls, pipe runs and garages, so a problem can start next door.
