Venice entry points, from the canals to the alleys
Canal banks and decks
Houses on the canals sit right at the water, with small docks, decks and garden walls along the bank. Norway rats burrow in soft ground and travel along the water’s edge, and the space under a deck or a crack where a wall meets the house gives them a way in at ground level.
Walk-street alleys
On the walk streets, the front of the house faces a garden path and the back opens onto an alley with garages, trash bins and parked cars. Rodents move along alleys at night, and garages and storage at the back of the lot give them cover a few steps from the house.
Old beach apartments
The early 1900s buildings on Pacific Avenue and around Windward Avenue have old wood framing, reworked plumbing and many units under one roof. Shared walls, pipe chases and trash areas let rodents move between units, so a sighting in one apartment can start somewhere else in the building.
Restaurants on Abbot Kinney and the Boardwalk
The restaurant and shop rows along Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Ocean Front Walk sit close to homes. Kitchen waste, deliveries and back doors that open onto alleys draw rodents to these blocks, and a business and the house behind it often share the same alley.
In apartment buildings, rodents move between units through shared walls, pipe runs and garages, so a problem can start next door.
